Need for remaking > Need for remaking Mumbai is bursting at the seams due to influx of migrants from other parts of the country to this financial magnet. The resultant of all this is an overpopulated city with an unbearable load on a crumbling infrastructure and pressure on every available open space. Awkward and incremental planning has compounded the problems. In consonance with the guidelines and suggestions of various government policies, judicial comments and expert opinion, it is proposed to remake Mumbai, into a world class city in partnership with the government using principles of modern technology, planning and engineering by creation of “Remaking of Mumbai Federation”. We, at Remaking of Mumbai Federation, have taken up the herculean task of creating a World Class Mumbai utilizing the redevelopment of old and dilapidated buildings in the island city of Mumbai.
“Remaking of Mumbai Federation” is a constructive, positive and inclusive group, led by some of the great forward-looking Indians in positions of power striving towards better quality of life for this mega city’s 16 million people. The Federation is made up of over 12,800 local members, over 50 Associations, Institutions, Chambers and NGOs who represent millions of stake holders in this commercial capital of India.
The Federation proposes to create a replicable project to develop the island city of Mumbai, which contains over 32,000 pre-1940 old & dilapidated buildings having population of around 2.5 million.
People are still living in these houses under the shadow of death. We believe that sustainable and vertical development with cluster approach is the only solution to this critical problemIt is proposed to demolish these buildings on a sector by sector basis and create tall buildings while re-housing the tenants and selling extra space to cross subsidize the cost. Part of the proceeds of the free sale will be given to the Government for creating an infrastructural fund to augment and increase the infrastructure, create housing stock, generate corpus funds for maintenance of houses and generate funds to pay professional charges to global urban planners, engineers, consultants etc.
The objectives of the Federation are
- Protection to life and property of over 2.5 million people who live in these old dilapidated houses.
- Deliberate planning process for the entire city of Mumbai
- Increase and augmentation of infrastructure to meet the requirements of this modern economic capital of India.
- Creation of housing stock for the poor.
- Setting standards of excellence in constructing buildings using engineering and technological advances in this developing country.
- Transform horizontal urban space to tall buildings with lots of open spaces, amenities and play grounds.
- And, as a result of the above, transform Mumbai into a WORLD CLASS CITY.
